Yellow pad (interesting things page)

According to an article by Suzanne Snider published in the Legal Affairs magazine, Thomas Holley found a use for paper scraps from his paper mill company. He started his own production line of yellow pads made from these lower ended scraps in 1888.

Some say the yellow paper is more readable than plain white paper, which may contribute to the success and iconism of the yellow paper pad (not to mention their dirt cheap price). Nonetheless, others say that it's not just the yellow paper that contributes to its readability, but the contrast between the ink and the paper color. Also, the yellow pad, unlike white paper, is already yellow and does not age and get yellow. They're meant to last!
